Wedding photography – rewarding and sought after niche
The first thing that you need to know about wedding photography is the fact that it is currently one of the most sought after niches in paid professional photography. You will be able to charge a premium for your services in wedding photography. More than that, what you can be quite rest assured of is that it is one of the most rewarding niches out there as well. When you come to think about it, your clients are basically entrusting you with one of the most important days of their lives. This is both an honor and a responsibility. You need to make sure that you are able to move around a lot and really keep up with the moments and events as they happen, no matter how difficult it may turn out to be. You need to make sure that you are able to really move around and follow through the events of the day.
Make sure that you get to wear a comfortable pair of shoes in the process.
You need something that will be able to help you last all throughout the rest of the wedding photo shoot. Although it may at times seem a bit tempting to reach out for that attractive pair of shoes that look really great but aren’t really that comfortable, you should take a step back and really think things through again.
Go for a pair of shoes that are both comfortable and look great for your outfit. You don’t always have to choose one over the other at the end of it all. Your feet will thank you for it at the end of the day. The way that you feel factors in quite importantly during the wedding photo shoot. You need to be in your best possible shape and you need to really be comfortable enough and confident enough to carry things through with the tasks that you will need to go through with in your wedding photo shoot. You have to remember that no one really likes a grumpy wedding photographer and it will be next to impossible to smile from ear to ear for about three hours straight or more if your feet hurt.
Manage people well
Manage the people who are trying to disrupt your photo shoot by trying to take photos of their own while you are going through your shots as well. You need to handle things like these carefully. You need to learn some crowd management skills to make sure that you do not step on anyone’s toes and so that you do not end up offending anyone when you are at the point wherein you are telling them that they can’t do what they want all of the time. You should work on some kind of solution that will both work for you and for what you those people are trying to achieve as well at the same time. Give them a few minutes in between takes so take photos of their own so that they don’t end up disrupting your shooting process when you are going through your shots.
Lighting can be tricky to deal with especially when you are still trying to find your footing around wedding photography. This is one of the first few things that you should go ahead and prioritize and learn first more than anything else though because lighting is something that can make or break a certain wedding photography shoot. The kind of lighting situation that you have or that you need to deal with in wedding photography will more or less show how the rest of the photos will turn out. That is why it is very important for you to make sure that you are able to really equip yourself all throughout the process. You need to know what the best ways are to manipulate lighting during a wedding photography and how to make them work out for your advantage.
Bounce the light
One basic principle of lighting that you should take note of is the fact that bouncing lights can actually be the perfect effects when you are aiming for a diffused kind of lighting. A narrow lighting source such as a lighting stand or a strobe light is something that can be quite difficult to diffuse if you don’t more or less have a few tricks up your sleeve. This may be a little hard to wrap your head around but when it all comes down to it, all that you will really need is just a matte surface and something that is preferably white, like a white wall, for example. Bounce the narrow light source off of that and you immediately get a diffused kind of lighting that is perfect for portraits because it is something that is broad and soft and it highlights all of the best features of someone’s face.
Another thing you need to know about lighting is that the common notion that shadows are always bad for the wedding photography shoot may not always be correct when it all comes down to it. If you want something that is multi-dimensional or something that has a lot of volume, shadow is a great thing for you to play around with during the wedding photography shoot.
Shadows aren’t always all that bad if you know how to use them all in the right context.
It is all a matter of being able to use it the right way and more or less being able to really set it up in all of the best angles so that you will be able to achieve what you are aiming to achieve. Volume can be really interesting and multi-faceted when they are applied well in the pictures that are being taken in the wedding photography shoot. Try to see if you will be able to practice the use of shadows and how you will be able to control them the right way so that they don’t end up being a little bit too overpowering or too controlling in your photos. It is all about moderation and techniques in the application of the lighting.
You need to make sure that you are always able to assess what the lighting situation will be during your wedding photo shoots. There are a lot of things to consider and you need to make sure that you know exactly what you are getting into so that you will be able to make all of the necessary preparations for you to get the best possible looking photos throughout the entire process. A great wedding photographer always tries to test the waters by visiting the area ahead of time. You should be well informed enough to more or less go ahead and make sure that you are able to do the same when it all comes down to it.
It may seem like a bit of a stretch and it may require some amount of effort but surveying the area ahead of time and observing how the light elements come into play is something that will really make you improve in your shots and I your performance as a wedding photographer all at the same time. Try to visit the venue at the same time of the day that the wedding will be held because lighting can change depending on this. There is also the weather, the wind, and the setup of the place for you to consider when it all comes down to it so make sure that you are more or less able to check things like those out as well.
Make it a point to be a really “quiet” wedding photographer.
You don’t necessarily have to announce to the rest of the people in the venue that you are taking your photos. The camera tends to do that because of the clicking sound that usually accompanies it whenever you click through some photos. There is actually a way for you to be able to work around this. Most of the high quality cameras out there actually come along with a setting that quiets down the clicking noise whenever you take your shot. A lot of people can get nervous when they feel as if they are being scrutinized by the camera all of the time. Putting your camera on a quiet setting can really work to your advantage as a wedding photographer. Through this, you will be able to take out and document authentic looking expressions and really capture the essence of the moment without taking away anything from it through startling the people that you are more or less taking photos of at the end of the day.
Minimize use of flash
Another thing that you should also try to implement as a wedding photographer is to minimize the use of flash photography, if you can help it. There are some other instances out there wherein it would not be possible for you to more or less avoid the use of the flash but as much as possible, you should make it a point to try to go ahead and use it sparingly. You should also try to use strobe lights in your setup if you are dealing with low light settings because they provide better illumination that just the flash.
An agreement in wedding photography is usually something that is formal.
You need to make sure that you are able to legalize said agreement just so that both parties are protected as much as possible. Getting a contract drawn up is great because then, it means that you are able to put it all down on paper and that means that you have something to hold on to in case some unexpected things turn up one way or the other during the wedding photography shoot. If the clients are bringing in their own version of a contract to the wedding photography and you are not the one who composed it, read through each and every single paragraph to make sure that you understand fully and completely what those paragraphs stipulate. If there is anything that is a bit unclear to you or if there is anything that you do not completely understand, do not rush through the process of signing it straight away.
Get a lawyer to review the contract for you and to explain it for you if there are sections that are still a bit unclear to you.
Read through the fine print as much as possible so that you don’t end up with any unpleasant surprises in the long run. You need to make sure that you know the contract in and out and that you are not confused about anything that you will need to deliver on your end. Protect your career in wedding photography at all times and make sure that it is managed and handled the right way every single time. Contracts are binding legal documents and you need to make sure that you are able to treat it seriously and give it the time of the day before you seal it with your signature. It will dictate how the rest of the wedding photography will go through. Always consult a lawyer when you are dealing with legal documents such as these so that you are sure that you are doing things the right way when it all comes down to it.
Be honest about the things that you cannot do in your wedding photography business.
Although it goes without saying that you will be able to more or less handle the wedding photography side of things just fine, this is not always the case for the other parts of your business. If you need to do your taxes, then by all means, get a licensed accountant on board. If you need great content, get a real writer or a real web developer to help you out. There is no shame in outsourcing some aspects of your business that you know that you are not really that well versed in at the end of the day. Leave it to the professionals to go ahead and do what they need to do when it all comes down to it. Don’t proceed to do something if you know you will not be able to pull it off the right way.
